History

Varadharaja Perumal Temple has a rich history spanning many centuries and is one of the most important Vaishnavite temples in South India. The temple was originally built during the Chola period and was later expanded by the Vijayanagara rulers, who added grand halls, gopurams, and intricate sculptures.

The temple flourished as a major center of Vaishnavism and was visited by kings, saints, and scholars over the centuries. Its inscriptions provide valuable information about the contributions of various dynasties. Today, it remains one of the most revered 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu and a major pilgrimage destination in Kanchipuram.

Mythology

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma performed a sacred yajna (ritual sacrifice) at Kanchipuram to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Goddess Saraswati, upset that she was not present at the ritual, attempted to stop the yajna by taking the form of the Vegavati River. Lord Vishnu appeared and protected the sacrifice by lying across the river, allowing Brahma to complete the ritual.

Pleased with Brahma’s devotion, Lord Vishnu manifested at this sacred place as Varadharaja Perumal, meaning “the Lord who grants boons,” and blessed his devotees. The legend symbolizes divine protection, devotion, and the fulfillment of sincere prayers.
