Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam(Kanakadurga Temple)

Kanaka Durga Temple is an ancient Hindu shrine located on Indrakeeladri Hill in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. According to Hindu mythology, Sage Indrakila performed severe penance to Goddess Durga and requested her to reside on the hill to protect devotees. The goddess later defeated the demon Mahishasura and manifested as Kanaka Durga, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

The temple has been a prominent center of worship for centuries and gained importance under various South Indian dynasties. Along with the nearby Malleswara Swamy Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, it became a significant pilgrimage destination. Today, Kanaka Durga Temple is one of the most revered Shakti temples in India, attracting millions of devotees, especially during the Navaratri and Dasara festivals.

According to Hindu mythology, Sage Indrakila performed intense penance and prayed to Goddess Durga for protection from evil forces. Pleased with his devotion, the goddess appeared and promised to reside on the hill, which later came to be known as Indrakeeladri. When the demon Mahishasura terrorized the world, Goddess Durga fought and defeated him, restoring peace and righteousness. Kanaka Durga Temple showcases traditional Dravidian architecture, characterized by its ornate gopuram (tower), intricately carved pillars, and sacred sanctum. Situated atop the scenic Indrakeeladri Hill overlooking the Krishna River, the temple combines spiritual significance with natural beauty. The main sanctum houses the idol of Goddess Kanaka Durga in her majestic eight-armed form. The temple complex also includes shrines dedicated to Lord Malleswara Swamy and other deities.
